My Beauty Routine – Makeup

It feels silly for me to be doing a post on beauty for a few reasons. The first being that the last time I wore a full on face of makeup was my wedding almost 6 years ago. Scratch that. It was my brother-in-law’s wedding last September. And as you can see below, it wasn’t the greatest ever.

So while I’m not anywhere near good enough to give makeup tips, I will give you my makeup routine. And you can do with it what you like. Including closing this window immediately.

Before we get into my exact makeup routine, there is something that you need to know about me. I have the worst skin allergies. I can boil it down to one sentence. I’m pretty much allergic to every chemical you can put on your skin. Next week I will share my favorite lotions and stuff, but it took me almost 3 years to get to where I can even have good lotions on my skin. And I will explain my allergies and what I do to avoid in case it will help you.

So all of the products that I use are as harsh-chemical free as I can find.

[face cream]

I stumbled on Yes To products a few years ago. When I found the Yes to Coconut Souffle Moisturizer, I knew I needed it. They are paraben free, which is really important to me. It goes on my face and doesn’t feel slimy or heavy. I think it’s available at most drug stores.

I used to use Oil of Olay Complete. It had sunscreen in it and kept my face nice and moisturized. And then my allergies cropped up and I had to discard using it. And even though I can’t use Oil of Old Lady (what we call it in my family), I did want to mention it. My Grandmother used Oil of Old Lady for 60 years and had amazing skin. I don’t know if you can tell in this picture, but she didn’t have a ton of wrinkles and her skin always looked so nice. My mom uses Oil of Old Lady still and doesn’t like to deviate from it. My mom’s skin looks really nice too. So if you don’t have any allergies, I recommend this. Unofficially, this cream keeps my mom looking young!

I am a huge fan of Bare Minerals. Not only is it a safe makeup for me, I think it really works so great with my skin. I used to use a loose powder, but this pressed powder works just as well for me. I think this makeup covers my face nicely and stays for a lot of the day. Considering I rub my face constantly, this stays on nicely and doesn’t feel like it’s caked on your face.

I’m not sure how I got introduced to the Urban Decay eye shadow pallets. But I am so excited that I found them. The colors are perfect for everyone.  They’re the perfect neutral shades.

Side note – I heard recently that you’re supposed to switch out your makeup every three (3!!!) months. I do not follow this rule. My credit card could not handle this.

I’ve never been a big mascara person. For as long as I can remember, it made my eyes itch and burn. Then I would rub my eyes and smear it and look like a raccoon. So I generally avoid it. Except for weddings. Because my mother told me there are times in life that I need to wear mascara. I have largely ignored most of the times she has told me about but did give her one – weddings. And based on the various pictures above, you can’t really tell that I’m even wearing mascara or have eye lashes at all.

After much research, it was determined that a major ingredient in mascara is thimerosal, which is a major no-no for me. So when I have to attend weddings and wear mascara, I turn to 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara in Black Tea.

It works just like any other drug store or expensive mascara. My eyes only feel a little itchy and I have a slighty longer window before I can’t take it anymore and rub it off. Which I think is a huge win.

[face bronzer]

Bare Minerals makes a face bronzer that gives you a sun kissed look. It’s pretty great. I don’t think it looks bad. But feel free to let me know if it does.

[my favorite travel kit]

Urban Decay makes this travel kit and I found it at Sephora a few years ago around Christmas. I can’t find it or anything like it online but I recommend staking out your local store around Christmas.

I would love to hear what your favorites are.  Leave me a comment and let’s discuss!
